Retrospective Features

Retrospective is a highly flexible and powerful tool for finding small or large data in your log files.

Retrospective enables you to easily identify and configure thousands of log files scattered around a number of servers on your network. Setting up custom profiles containing desired log files takes only a matter of seconds and data processing itself is many times faster than a wildcard grep.

Local resources

You can easily drag and drop log files stored on your local hard drive onto the Profiles tab and start browsing filtered log entries in almost no time.

SSH protocol support enables searching log files stored on remote servers.

Profiles enable convenient log file grouping, allowing to precisely define which log files should be processed.

Memory Management

Retrospective features an advanced system resources management option, which enables storing search results on your local hard drive, and loading them into the system memory for viewing and analyzing.

Tail (Monitor)

Tail (also called monitor or live search) is a feature based on the Unix “tail -f” command which constantly processes log files and analyzes new entries.

Filter your data

View and analyze all new log entries written to tailed log files or create a filter to display only entries containing specific phrases, such as CRITICAL, FAILURE, ERROR, etc.

When testing your software or hardware products, you can plan a certain event to occur and filter only the log entries which directly relate to the functionality being tested.

Retrospective is available for Windows, Mac and all different Linux/Unix distributions including Solaris, HP-UX and IBM AIX.

Retrospective can be used on Windows. Both 32 & 64 bit versions are available.

All 32 and 64 bit operating systems are supported.

All 64 bit operating systems are supported, 32 bit on request.

Easy Configuration

Usually, such advanced log browsing solutions are highly complex to set up and run. This is not the case with Retrospective. It can be installed, configured and used effectively within minutes.

Profile Manager

Retrospective features an easy to use Profile Manager which enables creating user profiles and adding data sources quickly and conveniently.

Profiles Tab

The Profiles tab enables creating and editing user profiles, containing log files definitions.

When adding log files, Retrospective allows defining expression to include log files which match a certain phrase.

Log entries separation

Retrospective automatically determines how log entries are separated.

Drag and drop

Log files stored locally can be dragged and dropped onto the Profiles tab, which depending on where the file will be dropped, will result in creating a new profile or adding source definition to a given profile.

Easy To Use

Retrospective features tabbed user interface, just like your favorite web browser. Each tab can be extracted to a separate window or included in a different Retrospective window.

Search Tabs

Each Search tab enables processing log data independent from each other. You can tail essential log files on your web server in one tab, while searching for specific log entries in another tab.

Simple/Advance Mode

Retrospective can operate in simple and advanced modes. The simple mode allows specifying only one search phrase as a parameter while the advanced mode enables defining additional parameters (text and date) to precisely define search query.

Explode all your tabs to individual windows (especially useful when doing multiple tails) and then implode all windows back to tabs in a single window.

Save View

Store application state (opened tabs, search definitions, etc.) and load after closing Retrospective or email it to your colleague.

History & Bookmarks

Retrospective stores a complete history of all search and tail queries and lists them in the History tab.

You can save a particular search/tail definition as a named bookmark and reuse it later from the Bookmarks tab.

Local Filtering

After Retrospective finishes processing log files data, you can filter search results to limit the number of log entries without having to redefine your search criteria and process all log files again.

Retrospective is fast. It searches faster than any other stand-alone log analyser on the market and it doesn’t require its own server, database or team of operators to display your log data (and there’s no daily Mb limit!)

Fast Search

Optionally use the fast search which quickly checks file content dates and excludes them if they are out of the date range in your defined filter.

To speed up the search you can limit the scope of your search by the use of easily defined filters.

Retrospective has been optimised to do the fastest log search possible. Try it and see!

Retrospective is a stand-alone product that doesn’t require a huge investment in either time or money.

Monitoring and Other Uses

Retrospective can be used in many ways beyond its role as a simple log search tool.

Supervising a server farm isn’t an easy task. Retrospective allows defining multiple tailing jobs which run simultaneously enabling you to be the first one to know when a problem occurs.

Log files often contain some useful data which can be processed and used for building detailed system statistics. Simply, define search parameters and process log data to gather necessary information, and save the results to include them in your report.

Running Retrospective in production environments is completely safe. It uses an SFTP client to browse the remote file system and an SSH client to execute the commands. The invoked commands include: head, tail, grep, zgrep, cat, zcat, bzcat, tar, unzip, awk. No additional tools need to be installed on servers accessed by Retrospective.

Access rights

Retrospective requires read access to the files and folders stored on remote hosts, similarly to any other SSH client. Retrospective does not modify accessed files while searching/tailing.

Retrospective SSH protocol to securely establish connection with remote host, so the password cannot be intercepted. It never uploads any data to the server it’s accessing. Retrospective operates fully in ad-hoc mode, without caching data.

A single Retrospective instance invokes up to 10 simultaneous commands on a server and it may open up to 10 simultaneous connections. Search mechanisms use a saturation/adaptation algorithm: invoking one search over one file will most likely open one connection, etc.

Retrospective requires JRE (Java Runtime Environment) version 6 (or newer) installed. As of Retrospective 3.3.0 you will need JRE 7.

Passwords Encryption

Passwords for accessing remote hosts can be encrypted for complete protection of essential data.
